Magda Denes was just five in 1939 when her father fled their native Budapest for America because he was the editor of an Anti-Nazi newspaper. His family didn't hear from him again until after the war. Thrown upon the mercy of relatives they were poor, and then hunted as they were Jewish. When the Red Army arrived they weren't the long hoped for saviours and the family had to flee in secret, eventually reaching America via France and Spain.
